SUMMARY:Webinar | Basic Operations (2PM)
DESCRIPTION:2 CA Drinking Water Contact Hours awarded. \n\nCertificates for contact hours are available through your profile.\nHow do I get my certificate?\nContact hours have been approved for the Registered Environmental Health Specialist Program.\nPriority attendance will be given to those from smaller water systems.\n\nFor registration questions\, contact us at: registration@rcac.org• (916) 447-9832 ext. 1429 \nFor a calendar of RCAC’s full lineup of training courses offered\, click here! \nThis is one of two presentations that will be given on the same day.  If you are interested but can not make this event\, there is another offering on the same day between 10AM and 12PM.  You can find more information on that event here. \nMost small public water systems have a board of directors\, and many of these directors are volunteers who can be unfamiliar with drinking water system components. This workshop will familiarize board members and new managers with the basic workings of a public water system. \nParticipants will learn:\n• Drinking Water Regulations\n• Capacity Development\n• Water Sources\n• Water Distribution Operations\n• Water Treatment Operations\n• Financial responsibilities \n\nThe recommended audience includes board members\, council members\, those in a general decision-making area of a utility and water system operators. A more diverse group of participants should generate good feedback and networking regarding the care and feeding (operation and maintenance) of components found in public water systems.

SUMMARY:Webinar | Keeping the Water On During and After the COVID-19 Pandemic
DESCRIPTION:Due to COVID-19\, many water utilities are not shutting water off for non-payment\, as well as waiving late and reconnection fees. Some utilities have made this choice\, while others are under moratoriums set by their states. How can utilities continue to operate so that the water stays on to combat COVID-19 through handwashing when some customers aren’t paying? This webinar will provide practices to mitigate the revenue loss to utilities. \n\n\nOne practice will involve offering low-flow restrictors to non-paying customers to reduce their volumetric charges. We will also look at how customer assistance programs (CAPs) can be started or expanded at small water systems. The webinar will cover ways to fund these CAPs. We will also consider some practical ways to reduce costs by shifting resources during the pandemic. \n\n\n\nPresenter: Stacey Isaac Berahzer\, CEO\, IB Environmental \nContact: smallsystems@syr.edu \nPartners: \n \n\n\n

SUMMARY:Webinar | Small Systems Guidance for America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018
DESCRIPTION:Sign up today to join the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA)\, the Rural Community Assistance Partnership (RCAP) and the American Water Works Association’s (AWWA) “Small Systems Guidance for America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018” webinar tailored specifically to water utilities in the small systems category. America’s Water Infrastructure Act (AWIA) of 2018 was signed into law on October 23\, 2018 and requires community (drinking) water systems serving more than 3\,300 people to develop or update risk assessments and emergency response plans (ERPs). The Risk and Resilience Assessment submission deadline for water systems serving a population of 3\,301 – 49\,999 is June 30\, 2021. \nThe webinar will feature: \n\nAn overview of EPA’s NEW Risk and Resilience Assessment Checklist and Emergency Response Plan (ERP) Guidance for small systems;\nAn introduction to RCAP’s recently released E-Learning Module on AWIA compliance; and\nA Q&A session.\n\n“Small Systems Guidance for America’s Water Infrastructure Act of 2018” is the third webinar in an EPA series\, titled “Partnering for Security and Resilience.” The webinar will feature newly released guidance\, developed by EPA\, to help small systems comply with AWIA. The webinar will also introduce RCAP’s recently released E-Learning Modules and provide an overview of the five E-Learning Modules created for small systems complying with AWIA. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar | Funding and Financing Strategies for Integrated Hazard Mitigation and Water Resource Plans
DESCRIPTION: In light of increasing development and ever-changing future conditions\, increasingly stressed infrastructure\, and growing financial pressures\, integrating hazard mitigation and water quality-focused resource management is becoming more and more important to the success of water systems and other public-serving entities. While finance and budgeting is often considered a last step in developing a project or program\, incorporating a financing strategy early on in any planning process can help ensure long-term project success. In this webinar\, we will provide a strategies for incorporating funding and financial strategies into integrated plans and explore various solutions for how local communities can pay for water resource project. \nPresented by: Matthew Konfirst\, Physical Scientist\, US EPA Region 3 State & Watershed Partnerships Section (3WD31)

SUMMARY:Webinar | First Steps to an Effective Internship Program at Your Utility Inspiration from the Intern Herself
DESCRIPTION:Why did Lorraine\, a 19-year old college student\, change her career aspirations towards water utilities right before she left for college? Because of her “life changing” work during her water internship. Lorraine says “I never would have found water if it were not for this opportunity. It was everything I loved in life wrapped up into one.” \nIntroducing young people to water careers isn’t rocket science\, but it does take a little time and effort. Find out how to tap into easy-to-use resources that help you make connections with local schools to set up education and internship programs that will inspire students in your community to want to work at your water utility. \nHear from the intern herself. Lorraine will talk about what inspires her generation\, how to make meaningful connections to the public\, and why young people are probably more interested in what you do\, than you think. \nPresenters will include Tonya Bronleewe of the Environmental Finance Center at Wichita State and Lorraine Lowrey herself. \nRegister for the event here!

SUMMARY:Webinar | Reducing Water System Costs Through Energy Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:Nearly four percent of the nation’s electricity is consumed by water and wastewater facilities\, and industry experts are predicting that energy costs could increase 20 percent by 2035. Water and wastewater treatment costs often consume 50 percent or more of the budget of many small communities. Historically\, water and wastewater facilities were designed for peak capacity\, with little consideration for operational efficiency. An energy audit performed by trained and certified personnel can often uncover potential energy savings of 10 to 50 percent annually\, but even a cursory examination done by in-house staff can often result in substantial energy savings. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn:\n• How to identify the biggest “energy wasters” in your operation\n• How to calculate the break-even point (payback) of retrofitting obsolete equipment\n• The difference between Level 1 (in-house) and Level 2 (contracted) energy audits\n• How to conduct a cursory energy audit of your facility \nWho should attend: This workshop will give all water systems the information and resources needed to start down the path toward increased efficiency and decreased costs. Recommended audience is system operators\, managers\, board members and community leaders with an interest in energy cost reduction.

SUMMARY:Must-Have Financial Policies for Small Water Systems
DESCRIPTION:  \nPresented by Mary Fleming\, RDS Environmental\, RCAC. \nDrinking water and wastewater treatment is essential\, not only to a city or a community\, but to even a single household. The service you provide to your community is essential to the health and safety of your customers\, you have the profound obligation to ensure that your utility’s finances are managed properly to support the continual provision of essential water-related services where you live. Your utility can sink or swim based on its financial standing. An informed plan for continuity is essential and\, while there is no foolproof way to prevent fraud\, errors and omissions\, a clear\, well-documented set of financial controls communicated to staff will minimize exposure. \nIn this webinar\, we will glimpse into the consequences of real life utilities that operated with inadequate or non-existent financial policies and how the situations they faced could be avoided.
