SUMMARY:Webinar: EPA: Small Systems Monthly Series: Low-cost solar powered control systems in non-PRASA drinking water treatment systems
DESCRIPTION:There are 242 small communities in remote and rugged locations not connected to Puerto Rico Aqueduct and Sewer Authority (PRASA) for their drinking water. This research seeks to develop\, install\, evaluate\, and monitor affordable and sustainable treatment technologies to support non-PRASA systems achieving regulatory compliance. Over the past 14 years\, substantial improvements have been made and EPA’s most recent upgrades from May 2021 are showcased in this presentation. \nPresented by Daniel Williams and Page Jordan\, EPA’s Office of Research and Development \nAbout the Presenters: \nDaniel Williams is a Physical Scientist with EPA’s Office of Research and Development\, Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response. He has a B.S. in environmental science from University of Cincinnati in Ohio. Since joining EPA in 2001\, his research has focused on the development of pilot design\, fabrication and installation. Daniel has been awarded a patent for his Portable Evaluation Pilot Skid (PEPS). \nPage Jordan is a Physical Scientist with EPA’s Office of Research and Development\, Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response. She received her B.S. and M.S. in environmental science from Miami University in Ohio. Her research focuses on chemical and microbial contamination in drinking and storm waters. \nWho Should Attend? \nState primacy agencies\, Tribes\, community planners\, technical assistance providers\, academia\, and water systems interested in issues facing community water systems and solutions to help solve them.

SUMMARY:Webinar: EPA: Small Systems Monthly Series: Underground Storage Tanks: How They May Impact Small Drinking Water Systems
DESCRIPTION:In the United States\, there are over 500\,000 active underground storage tanks (USTs) that store petroleum or hazardous substances\, and about 62\,000 leaking UST sites that need cleaning up today. The greatest potential threat from a leaking UST is the contamination for ground water\, which serves as the source of drinking water for nearly half the population in the United States. Given the proximity of these leaking USTs to water supplies\, it is important for small drinking water systems to understand where the leaking UST sites are to protect the water supply and to understand the water demands in proximity to the leaking underground storage tanks. This is especially needed where ground water wells are located on the property for the tank facilities. EPA developed the first national database and application (UST Finder ) on underground storage tanks\, a user-friendly tool that provides the needed geospatial data for these tank facilities and source water protection areas. \nPresented by Fran Kremer and Alexander Hall\, EPA’s Office of Research and Development \nAbout the Presenters: \nFran Kremer serves as a Senior Scientist in the Office of Research and Development’s Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response. Fran works with Agency Program Offices\, Regions and States and public/private partnerships to further research and its implementation in managing contaminant sources to protect water resources. \nAlex Hall is a Geographer in EPA’s Office of Research and Development\, Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response. He is responsible for the data analytics and the development of geographic information system tools in addressing source contaminants and impacts on water quality. His work included the development of a national database and web mapping application for storage tanks and private domestic wells and the development of tools to prevent contamination of source waters to protect public and private water supplies. \nNote: A certificate of attendance will be offered for this webinar \nWho Should Attend? \nState primacy agencies\, Tribes\, community planners\, technical assistance providers\, academia\, and water systems interested in issues facing community water systems and solutions to help solve them.

SUMMARY:Webinar: Diversity in California Water Webinar CUWA's DEI Toolkit and Lessons Learned
DESCRIPTION:Continuing our Diversity in California Water webinar series\, two California water leaders will share lessons learned to support DEI efforts within their agencies. The agencies are members of the California Urban Water Agencies (CUWA). \nCUWA has developed a DEI Toolkit for water and wastewater agencies to help support their diversity programs. The toolkit shares ideas and progress stories to support the development of DEI programs in California’s water sector. \nThe toolkit summarizes best practices from member agencies\, including: sharing lessons learned through DEI program implementation; compile resources/examples; and complement broader frameworks. \nWednesday\, February 16th\, Noon – 1:00 p.m.\nRegister for the webinar >\nInformation flyer >\nDownload the CUWA toolkit\nJoin the webinar early at 11:50 a.m. to hear one of CWEA’s new Justice\, Equity\, Diversity and Inclusion Openers (called a “JEDI-Opener”). \nEstablished in 1990\, the California Urban Water Agencies (CUWA) is a non-profit corporation of 11 major urban water agencies that are responsible for serving drinking water to about two-thirds of California’s population. As the collective voice for the largest urban water purveyors in California\, CUWA provides a technical perspective to promote common understanding and consensus solutions among the urban water community. \nModerator: Dale Hunter\, California African American Water Education Foundation \nPanelists \n\nAlejandra Haro\, Alameda County Water District\nMonique Earl\, Los Angeles Department of Water and Power\n\nThe Diversity in California webinar series is supported by California’s water associations\, including: ACWA\, CASA\, CA-NV AWWA\, CWEA and BAYWORK.

SUMMARY:Do the Math: Operator Math 101 Series Part 2 of 2
DESCRIPTION:At a minimum\, every public water system regardless of size and complexity requires a certified water distribution operator. In addition\, those systems using treatment also must have an operator that holds a water treatment operator certification. The most significant hurdle for many grade 1 and grade 2 operators in passing the operator certification exam\, however\, is the math portion of the test. Typically\, the math section of the certification exam constitutes about 35% of the total exam score so proficiency in math is necessary to pass the test. \nThe math included in each session is based on the expected-range-of-knowledge for the California distribution D1/D2 exams. \nThe target learner for this training wants (and needs) one specific thing: the ability to accurately calculate operator certification exam math questions. Accordingly\, the\nlearning event design focuses solely on this need. This training is not designed for “contact hours “or participant “entertainment”. This is a hands-on training with an\nexpectation of continuous participation — working and answering math problems – throughout the entire session. \n In Part 2\, participants will learn how to calculate:\n• Area of a circle\n• Area of a rectangle\n• Volume of a cylinder\n• Volume of a rectangular tank \nOperator Basics Series: The recommended audience includes operators and managers. \nClick here for brochure.
