SUMMARY:Webinar | Disinfection By-Products Rule Part 1/2
DESCRIPTION:This course Disinfection By-Products Rule Workshop is now offered as an online two-part series\, and is recommended to take both parts on the same day.  Part 1 will take place from 10:00am to 12:00pm and Part 2 will take place from 2:00pm to 4:00pm.  Please follow the link below to register.  Please click here if you would like to register for part 2. \nCertain commonly used drinking water disinfectants can react with naturally occurring materials in the water to form disinfection by-products (DBPs)\, which may pose long-term health risks. The Long-Term 2 Enhanced Surface Water Treatment Rule (LT2ESWTR) and the Stage 2 Disinfection By-Product Rule (DBPR) are the second phase of regulations meant to strengthen protection against microbial contaminants\, and at the same time reduce the potential health risks of DBPs. This workshop will examine the factors and causes of DBP formation and the regulatory framework of the Stage 1 and Stage 2 DBPR. \nParticipants will learn: \n • The differences between the Stage 1 and Stage 2 rules \n• How to calculate Locational Running Annual Averages (LRAA) and flow-  weighted averaging for compliance reporting \n• How to identify a Combined Distribution System (CDS) and whether it applies to you \n• Alternative disinfectants and application practices that may reduce or eliminate DBP formation \nFor registration questions\, contact us at: registration@rcac.org• (916) 447-9832 ext. 1429

SUMMARY:Webinar | EPA Indoor Air Quality Science: Indoor Chemistry
DESCRIPTION:We spend 90% of our time indoors where we are exposed to a complex mixture of chemicals and diverse microbial communities. Both indoor chemistry and microbes are influenced by excess moisture in homes\, and this dampness is associated with negative human health effects. The goal of this webinar is to elucidate how elevated relative humidity in housing can influence both indoor chemistry and microbiology. This work focuses on carpet and dust\, which are important reservoirs for human exposure. \nYou can register here now!

SUMMARY:Webinar | NOW+NEXT: Sandworm Cybersecurity
DESCRIPTION:In December of 2015 and 2016\, malicious cyber actors\, unknown to the world at the time\, launched a series of cyberattacks against civilian-owned and operated operational technology (OT) and industrial controls systems (ICS) in Ukraine’s critical infrastructure. These attacks disabled the electricity grid across the country\, turning out the lights and heat in the middle of a Ukrainian winter for hundreds of thousands of men\, women\, and children. From there\, the attack\, leveraging NotPetya malware\, spread across the globe\, impacting companies’ ability to provide critical public services such as transportation and health from Kyiv to Amsterdam to Heritage Valley\, Pennsylvania. Much has been written about the hacking group we now call Sandworm (see Sandworm: A New Era of Cyberwar and the Hunt for the Kremlin’s Most Dangerous Hackers by Andy Greenberg). Researchers\, some of whom are joining for today’s panel discussion\, traced several other high-profile attacks to the Sandworm team going back several years. In this program\, panelists will discuss Sandworm and the Russian governments’ worldwide cyber-enabled campaign to destabilize and interfere with critical economic systems of other countries\, the importance of government and critical infrastructure to work together to combat Sandworm and other APT actors\, and how organizations can mitigate the risk of future attacks like NotPetya.

SUMMARY:Webinar | SARS CoV-2 in Wastewater Monitoring
DESCRIPTION:The EPA’s Office of Research and Development invites you to a free webinar! \nAs part of their water research webinar series the US EPA invites you join them for a discussion of SARS CoV-2 in Wastewater Monitoring: Linking Research and Application to Meet Immediate Needs. \nWidespread studies conducted national and globally indicate that genes specific to SARS-CoV-2 (coronavirus that causes COVID-19) can be detected in wastewater. The ability to collectively sample both symptomatic and asymptomatic individuals has lead dozens of states\, cities\, and universities to actively monitor wastewater to inform public health decisions. The clarity of the reflection of community prevalence of infection within the mirror of wastewater can be distorted by several factors\, including variation in analytical detection methods\, decay and dilution of viral genes during wastewater transport\, and imprecision in relating the wastewater signal to other imperfect measures of community infection rates. \nThis webinar will focus on the following collaborative efforts of EPA’s SARS-CoV-2 wastewater monitoring research team to reduce uncertainties:\n• Method development within the lab.\n• Application in sewersheds with distinctive levels of industrial and stormwater impacts–in coordination\nwith the Cincinnati Metropolitan Sewer District.\n• Development of a wastewater surveillance systems in Ohio–in support of the Ohio Department\nof Health.

SUMMARY:Webinar | Wildfires and Resulting Impacts to Water Bodies Used as Drinking Water
DESCRIPTION:The United States Environmental Protection Agency is offering a free webinar as part of their small systems monthly series.  A certificate of attendance will be offered for this webinar as well.  The toxins released by wildfires can make their way into the water system\, and in light of the current environment the information is more useful than ever.  There will be an optional Q&A session from 3:00 to 3:30. \nYou can register here: attendee.gotowebinar.com/register/2152789201095229455 \nDetritus material in forest watersheds is the major terrestrial source of dissolved organic matter (DOM) and disinfection byproduct (DBP) precursors in water bodies used as drinking water sources and is also a fuel that can ignite wildfires. In these watersheds\, hot temperatures and dry conditions increase the likelihood of high-severity wildfires.  To help reduce this risk\, low-severity prescribed burning is used as a forest management practice to reduce fuel loads from forest\nfloor detritus material. In either high- or low-severity fires\, DOM exported to source waters from managed watersheds is likely to have different characteristics and treatability compared to DOM exported from unburned watersheds. These potential source water quality\nchanges may require that drinking water utilities adapt their treatment processes to account for these changes. Modeling and decision support tools can help explore treatability and adaptation strategies for these impacted water systems. \nWith presenters speaking on specialties from environmental engineering to biogeochemistry\, there will be plenty of valuable knowledge. \n

SUMMARY:Webinar | EPA Tools & Resources Webinar Water Network Tool for Resilience (WNTR)
DESCRIPTION:Drinking water utilities face multiple challenges—including aging infrastructure\, water quality concerns\, pipe breaks\, uncertainty in supply and demand\, natural disasters\, environmental emergencies and terrorist attacks. All of these have the potential to disrupt service to customers and damage critical infrastructure. Increasing resilience to these types of hazards is essential to improving water security. Simulation and analysis tools can help water utilities predict how their system will respond to expected and unexpected incidents and help inform decisions to make water distribution systems more resilient over time. EPA\, in partnership with Sandia National Laboratories\, developed the Water Network Tool for Resilience (WNTR)\, an open source Python package\, to integrate critical aspects of resilience modeling for water distribution networks into a single software framework. WNTR can help water utilities investigate the resilience of their water systems to a wide range of hazardous scenarios and evaluate emergency response actions and long-term resilience‐enhancing strategies. The software estimates potential damages from disaster scenarios; predicts how damage to infrastructure would occur over time; evaluates preparedness strategies; prioritizes response actions; and identifies worse case scenarios\, efficient repair strategies\, and best practices for maintenance and operations. This webinar will provide an overview of WNTR along with a few case study applications. \nTo join this webinar\, please register: \nhttps://epawebconferencing.acms.com/waternetworktoolforresilience/event/registration.html \nFor registration questions\, please contact tools_resources_webinar@epa.gov
