SUMMARY:Webinar | A Conversation Regarding Coronavirus and How it Might Affect Your Small Water System's Finances & Management
DESCRIPTION:This webinar is an opportunity to ask your questions and have our experts provide you the best answers we can at this time. Coronavirus has upended all of our lives in a very short period of time\, but water utilities are affected in very specific ways. Water personnel must keep working as the continuous provision of water couldn’t be more vital. However\, as others have been laid off or lost their incomes in one way or another\, the utilities will be losing revenue and many will not be performing shut offs. What might this mean for water system finances? How will your water system handle a deficit? Many small systems have 1 or maybe only 2 people who are familiar with the system\, including where assets are\, how it operates\, etc. What happens if personnel are not able to work due to coronavirus or something else\, such as an injury? Does the utility have a good map or an Operation and Maintenance Plan to help another operator who may need to come in and help but is not familiar with the system or the location of assets? Does the utility have an asset management plan it can rely on to help with continuing service? What emergency preparations have been made to date? What communications strategies have you considered?\ \nWe invite participants to ask questions in advance during the registration process. This webinar will follow an”office hours” question and answer format.   \nPresenters: \n\nShadi Eskaf\, Research Director. Environmental Finance Center at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill\nHeather Himmelberger\, Director\, Southwest Environmental Finance Center

SUMMARY:Webinar | Water Treatment Modeling Tools for Removing PFAS and Other Contaminants
DESCRIPTION:Even though carbon adsorption can be an effective treatment technology for removing organic compounds\, such\nas PFAS\, from water\, it can be expensive or may not achieve desired removal objectives if improperly designed.\nProper full-scale design of this adsorption process typically results from carefully controlled pilot-scale studies that\nare used to determine important design variables\, such as the type of adsorbent\, empty bed contact time\, and\nbed configuration. However\, these studies can be time consuming and expensive if they are not properly planned.\nTo meet the need for planning effective studies and to help alleviate expense\, EPA has signed an agreement with\nMichigan Technological University to make a series of adsorption models available to the public at no cost. \n\nThis webinar will provide an overview of the series of adsorption models\, along with examples of how they can be\nused to help design pilot treatment systems and provide a first-cut prediction of full-scale results. The information\ngenerated from the models will provide states and utilities with a better understanding of the fundamentals of\ncarbon adsorption and what that means to the operation\, performance\, and costs associated with this technology. \nPresenter: Thomas F. Speth\, Ph.D. \nTom is the Associate Director for Science for EPA’s Center for Environmental Solutions and Emergency Response\, where he is leading efforts on PFAS\, lead\, and small water systems. He is a professional engineer who has worked in the field of water treatment research at EPA since 1986. Over his career\, Tom has been active in numerous organizations\, including the American Water Works Association and the Water Research Foundation where he has served as Trustee\, Chair\, and EPA Liaison on numerous divisions\, committees\, and advisory boards. SUMMARY:Webinar | First Steps to an Effective Internship Program at Your Utility Inspiration from the Intern Herself
DESCRIPTION:Why did Lorraine\, a 19-year old college student\, change her career aspirations towards water utilities right before she left for college? Because of her “life changing” work during her water internship. Lorraine says “I never would have found water if it were not for this opportunity. It was everything I loved in life wrapped up into one.” \nIntroducing young people to water careers isn’t rocket science\, but it does take a little time and effort. Find out how to tap into easy-to-use resources that help you make connections with local schools to set up education and internship programs that will inspire students in your community to want to work at your water utility. \nHear from the intern herself. Lorraine will talk about what inspires her generation\, how to make meaningful connections to the public\, and why young people are probably more interested in what you do\, than you think. \nPresenters will include Tonya Bronleewe of the Environmental Finance Center at Wichita State and Lorraine Lowrey herself. \nRegister for the event here!

SUMMARY:Webinar | Reducing Water System Costs Through Energy Efficiency
DESCRIPTION:Nearly four percent of the nation’s electricity is consumed by water and wastewater facilities\, and industry experts are predicting that energy costs could increase 20 percent by 2035. Water and wastewater treatment costs often consume 50 percent or more of the budget of many small communities. Historically\, water and wastewater facilities were designed for peak capacity\, with little consideration for operational efficiency. An energy audit performed by trained and certified personnel can often uncover potential energy savings of 10 to 50 percent annually\, but even a cursory examination done by in-house staff can often result in substantial energy savings. \nIn this webinar\, you will learn:\n• How to identify the biggest “energy wasters” in your operation\n• How to calculate the break-even point (payback) of retrofitting obsolete equipment\n• The difference between Level 1 (in-house) and Level 2 (contracted) energy audits\n• How to conduct a cursory energy audit of your facility \nWho should attend: This workshop will give all water systems the information and resources needed to start down the path toward increased efficiency and decreased costs. Recommended audience is system operators\, managers\, board members and community leaders with an interest in energy cost reduction.

SUMMARY:Must-Have Financial Policies for Small Water Systems
DESCRIPTION:  \nPresented by Mary Fleming\, RDS Environmental\, RCAC. \nDrinking water and wastewater treatment is essential\, not only to a city or a community\, but to even a single household. The service you provide to your community is essential to the health and safety of your customers\, you have the profound obligation to ensure that your utility’s finances are managed properly to support the continual provision of essential water-related services where you live. Your utility can sink or swim based on its financial standing. An informed plan for continuity is essential and\, while there is no foolproof way to prevent fraud\, errors and omissions\, a clear\, well-documented set of financial controls communicated to staff will minimize exposure. \nIn this webinar\, we will glimpse into the consequences of real life utilities that operated with inadequate or non-existent financial policies and how the situations they faced could be avoided.
