Drinking water is one of the oldest known public health concerns. Preventing waterborne disease is one of the primary objectives of any drinking water system. Although waterborne disease outbreaks are relatively uncommon in the United States, they do occur. The importance of regular microbial monitoring cannot be over-emphasized. So much of your water system is underground and hidden from view; the only way to be sure you are effectively protecting public health is to monitor the quality of water delivered to customer taps. The primary tool for this is coliform monitoring. This regulation is in the process of revision.
